Rheometry

Our lab designs, builds and uses commercial torsional and extensional rheometers. Strain-controlled rheometers directly sense the forces generated by fluids in response to displacing the fluid in a known manner. Our lab owns and maintains a dedicated TA instruments ARES-G2 strain-controlled rheometer.

Stress-controlled rheometers apply some known load on a fluid and then measure the response of the material via strain. The Kroo group has access to a TA instruments DHR rheometer as well.

A variety of extensional devices are also in the lab to measure fluids not only in shear flow but also in extensional flows.


Mini-Fabrication Facility

The Kroo lab maintains a mini-shop room where tools like top of the line: a Bambu Labs 3D printer, Epilog Laser Cutter and other small scale rapid-fabrication prototyping tools are frequently used. This shop also contains a variety of tools for microfluidic chip fabrication.

A custom Ocean-faring Underwater laboratory

The Kroo lab is building a custom underwater glider to control the pressure and temperature of experiments via the laboratory’s vertical position within the ocean. It is designed to have onboard a controllable intake to sample water, and a closed onboard waste storage — and to perform imaging and simple automated experiments at different depths — for example to study how calcium concentration in seawater changes with depth, and how this might effect precipitation methods. The laboratory has no outlets and releases no waste.
